74. Filmkunstwochen: Starter Film Awards

In 2026, Bayreuth will be the site of a major anniversary: the Festival will celebrate its 150th anniversary. An occasion that will also make history in terms of its program. On July 26, 2026, Richard Wagner’s operatic triumph RIENZI will be performed for the very first time—and exclusively during the anniversary year of 2026—on the stage of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre, with a delayed broadcast to cinemas. The new production by Alexandra Szemerédy and Magdolna Parditka is under the musical direction of Nathalie Stutzmann. A celebration for all Wagner lovers—right there in the theater, with no waiting list.

The cinema broadcast will air with a two-hour delay relative to the performance at the Festspielhaus and will include two half-hour intermissions, during which a cinema-exclusive accompanying program (approx. 10 min. at the end of each intermission) will be shown.

As part of the 74th Munich Film Art Weeks, we are screening the film adaptation of Elfriede Jelinek’s novel WOMEN AS LOVERS as a preview ahead of its nationwide theatrical release, followed by a discussion with director Koxi.

Twelve Munich arthouse theaters are once again joining forces for a joint summer festival. This year’s focus at City Kino is an homage to the **cinema of the 1990s**, which opened the door to new worlds.

The 1990s were the decade in which postmodern ideas from philosophy and science flowed into the cultural mainstream. This gave rise to works of art that began to question certainties about our reality that had once been taken for granted. 

‎‎

Film proved to be the ideal medium for exploring these questions and creating images that have remained in our minds to this day: Don’t we actually live in a Matrix? Isn’t the world around us merely the product of our imagination—a construct that we ourselves constantly recreate based on our sensory perceptions? 

‎‎

From today's perspective, given the capabilities of CGI and AI, some of these films seem a bit dated visually and aesthetically – but most of them are true masterpieces of craftsmanship.

Men are becoming increasingly right-wing politically and increasingly lonely socially, men simply cannot deal with their emotions, and men continue to be responsible for the majority of all acts of violence: these statements reflect the entire plight of contemporary masculinity. The world seems to be full of brutally fragile guys.

It's time to take a closer look at them: in his live lecture Brutal Fragile Guys, Ole Liebl gets to the bottom of men and their feelings. What does the inability to feel have to do with anti-feminist radicalization on the internet? What are we overlooking when we assume that men have fewer feelings than women? How can you recognize toxic progressive men? Why are macho guys so often melancholic? How are women and queer people emotionally exploited? And what does Spider-Man have to do with all this? Entertaining, dense, and, despite the tough topics, equipped with a good dose of humor, Ole Liebl brings the results of modern masculinity research closer to us in an understandable way.

In his feature film debut and this year’s Berlinale entry, I UNDERSTAND YOUR FRUSTRATION, director Kilian Armando Friedrich draws on his own experiences in the cleaning industry to craft an intense drama that explores the pressures, vulnerabilities, and psychological strain faced by workers who lack a voice. The film’s preview will be followed by a discussion with the director, lead actress Sabine Thalau, and the film’s crew and cast.
